Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Coffin received her MSc (1997) under the supervision of Professor Thomas Michalak, MD (2001) from Memorial University of Newfoundland and completed a residency in Internal Medicine (2003) and Gastroenterology (2006) at the University of Calgary.  In 2006 she was awarded an Advanced Hepatology fellowship from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) to complete Hepatology training with Dr. Norah Terrault at University of California, San Francisco.  She joined the U of C Liver Unit in 2007 as a clinical scholar and received an Academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine in 2009.


Dr. Coffin was a recipient of a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator Award and has received operating grant funding from CIHR and junior faculty awards including the AASLD Jan Albrecht Commitment to Clinical and Translational Research Award and the American Gastroenterology Association Research Scholar Award.  Along with co-investigators Dr. Gil Kaplan and Dr. Chad Saunders she received an infrastructure grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and Alberta Advanced Education Technology to develop a translational health research clinical database and a Biobank.  She is the co-leader of the Canadian Hepatitis B Network to facilitate national multi-site studies on hepatitis B in Canada.

 

Clinical/Research Interests

Dr. Coffin’s clinical and translational research interests are in chronic hepatitis B infection, especially in unique patient populations (i.e., pregnancy, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis and HIV co-infection, liver transplantation, immunosuppression). Dr. Coffin’s research encompasses bench laboratory work on hepatitis B virus molecular virology, immunology, clinical outcomes/epidemiological studies as well as clinical trials on chronic hepatitis B infection.
